NYC Hollister & Subways
So my friends and I are visiting NYC for presidents week break. Today we did a bunch of things in the city, like touring Columbia University and visiting my moms old co-ed frat, and visiting Hungarian pastry shops. However, what stood out the most was Hollister and the subway.
We went shopping at the Hollister & Co. in SoHo. It was a very big store compared to the Hollister’s back in Albany. There were people who as far as I can tell just got paid to stand around the store looking pretty.
Two of them, a boy and a girl, were just standing at the bottom of the staircase in bathing suits. My friends were to scared to get a picture but being the fearless person that I am, I got a picture with the boy. I am reluctant to post the photo on my blog since I look absolutely terrible in the picture. I will have you know that my footwear was not my choice. I was forced by my mom to wear ugly snow boots because its snowing outside.
Later that day we were using the subway to get back home. On one of the subway cars, a boy got on. He had a large sack on his back probably the only possessions he had. He gathered the attention of all the passengers, and exclaimed that he was 16 years old and homeless. He said that he was sleeping on the subways. He talked about how he didn’t have a family and how he didn’t have a home to go to. He asked for money "a penny, a nickel, a dime. Any and all would be appreciated." It was extremely sad. One woman on the subway was crying. Later on another subway car, a man who said that he wasn’t homeless, he said that he was part of an organization to feed the helpless homeless people but he was volunteering to go on the subway to ask for money or food. Both the volunteer man, and the homeless 16 year old were extremely saddening.
Its odd to think that while some people are getting paid to stand around looking pretty in a big clothing store, some people are homeless and begging for money on a subway or begging for food and money for other people who probably cant even afford to get on the subway.
