Robert Philip Hanssen….. REVEALED
Evil Robert Philip Hanssen
What Robert Phillip Hanssen did as a double agent was horrible. Hanssen, 25, gave classified documents to the KGB which he stole from the FBI, where he worked. (Meserve, 1) He gave top secret documents and even SCI!!! SCI is even more secret than top secret. Hanssen was receiving tons of extra money. Because of the documents he gave, he was caught. (Vise, 1) Hanssen Started working for the KGB while still working for the FBI, this totally messed up the FBI.
When the Soviet Union fell apart, Hanssen continued giving information to the X- KGB agents. (Meserve, 1) He started spying on the FBI for the KGB in 1985. (Meserve, 3) Hanssen was trained to catch spies for the FBI. “He was an expert at what it took to avoid being caught…” said U.S. attorney Paul McNulty. (“Ex- FBI spy…”, 1) Thus, he became a traitor against America.
Hanssen gave the KGB some of the FBI’s top secret information, and even SCI! (Vise, 1) He told the KBG many things including: what the FBI knew about KGB double agents targeting the CIA, and he gave documents on HUMINT (Human Intelligence) collection plan. (Vise, 3) Aldrich Ames, a former CIA officer passed several u.s. sources to Russia. Freech says that Hanssen helped Moscow confirm the information. (Meserve, 2) When asked if this was one of the worse cases of espionage that the FBI ever encountered Freech replied “I would characterize in that fashion” (Meserve, 1) Therefore, what Hanssen did really hurt the FBI.
Because of this espionage Hanssen was receiving tons of extra money. Hanssen was receiving 600,000 dollars in cash, diamonds, and other valuables. He had 800,000 in escrow in another country. (Meserve, 2) Hanssen kept very quiet, he showed no signs that he was receiving extra money. (Meserve, 2) “Maybe he was intrigued with the game and not the gain” said major. (“Ex- FBI spy…”, 20) Though he was getting a lot of money, that was not the main reason he did it, he most likely just enjoyed the idea of being a spy.
Robert Hanssen was caught by the FBI. Russia had documents with Hanssen’s code name on it. The FBI also got a hold of these documents. They were both trying to find out who he was because Hanssen spied for the Soviet Union, NOT Russia.(Meserve, 1)
Dear Friends:
I thank you for your assistance these many years. It seems, however, that my greatest utility to you has come to an end, and it is time to seclude myself from active service.
I have been promoted to a higher do-nothing Senior Executive job outside of regular access to informaiton (sic) within the counterintelligence program. I am being isolated. Further, I believe I have detected repeated bursting radio signal emanations from my vehicle. The knowledge of their existence is sufficient. Amusing the games children play.
Something has aroused the sleeping tiger. Perhaps you know better than I.
Life is full of its ups and downs.
I will be in contact next year, same time, same place. Perhaps the correlation of forces and circumstance then will have improved.
Your friend,
Ramon Garcia
Ramon Garcia was one of Hanssen’s code names. As you can see from this letter, he stopped spying for the KGB during the 1990’s. (Havill, 2) Hanssen left his finger prints on the garbage bag when delivering this letter. The garbage bag was the dead drop. (Havill, 2) The FBI moved in and the letter, this is one way the FBI confirmed it was Hanssen. (Meserve, 3) Hanssen was under surveillance for at least four years. He was arrested at a park in Vienna, Virginia. (Meserve, 3) “The FBI learned of his identity long before the Russians. They are learning about it today [The year 2001.]” says Freech (Meserve, 1)
Hanssen totally messed up everything for the FBI by giving their secrets to the KGB. Ashcoft Said “It is extremely difficult when the person who was investigated and charged was one of out own.” (Meserve, 3) Paul Moore says that Hanssen‘s ultimate goal was “to play the game better than anybody’s ever played it before. He wants to be the best spy ever.” (“Ex- FBI spy…” 3) Hanssen was sent to a life sentence in jail, where he lost weight due to poor food. (“Ex- FBI spy…” 1-2) 9/11 offers new threats to he United States, making he FBI even more important. The security obviously wasn’t strong because It took the FBI a long time to catch Hanssen, but the security is getting better.
